CoverA Filipino musical drama about the mental health to the relationships that help us through them

Some of the hardest struggles to explain are the ones no one else can see.

Behind the carefully chosen selfies, TikTok videos and Instagram stories that make life look effortlessly put together are experiences that rarely make it online: anxiety, grief, questions of identity and the pressure to meet expectations. In Unfiltered, these hidden struggles become the <a s advocacy. He is a performer worth watching, and Unfiltered offers him an opportunity to demonstrate what he can bring to a story that asks for emotional openness.

Montinola, meanwhile, takes on a lead role that feels distinct from the kind of presence audiences might expect from her. She approaches the material with a vulnerability that serves the film’s more intimate moments, allowing the character’s emotional experience to take precedence over the polish often associated with screen leads.

Cabrera and Bautista also contribute meaningfully to the ensemble. Their performances help give the film’s intersecting experiences a sense of variety, ensuring that the teenagers do not blur into interchangeable portraits of distress. Together, the cast gives the story much of its emotional grounding, particularly when the film considers how young people navigate feelings they may not yet have the vocabulary or confidence to express.

Then there is the music. With eight original songs, Unfiltered takes the familiar conventions of the musical and puts them to an educational purpose. The numbers are catchy, but they are not simply interludes between dramatic scenes. They help communicate the characters’ inner lives and reinforce ideas around mental health in ways that are accessible and memorable. At its best, the music gives emotional experiences a language of their own, allowing the film to convey information without losing sight of its entertainment value.

That balance is important to the film’s wider ambitions. Through the First 100 National High Schools for Mental Health Initiative, Unfiltered aims to bring sponsored screenings to public schools across the Philippines, extending its conversations beyond cinemas and into communities. A film cannot replace professional care, nor can a single screening address every challenge faced by someone living with a mental health condition. But it can give students, parents and educators a shared point of reference, making a difficult subject a little easier to approach.

For me, the film’s most meaningful insight lies in its attention to both sides of the experience: the difficulty of living with a mental health condition and the uncertainty of caring for someone who has one. Speaking up matters, but so does what happens after. It takes patience to listen without judgement, humility to accept that we may not fully understand another person’s experience, and care to recognise when professional help is needed.

Unfiltered is not a substitute for those conversations or the support that must accompany them. It is an invitation to begin. Through its young cast, original music and commitment to taking mental health awareness into schools, the film makes a case for looking beyond what people choose to show us. Sometimes, the first act of care is simply to make room for the truth.

Unfiltered opens in cinemas nationwide on November 11, 2026. Schools and organisations can also book a screening to bring the film’s message of mental health awareness and empathy to more audiences.
